April 23, 2009 - Steve Hoovler

It was 75 degrees in the Madison Valley yesterday, and the forecast calls for snow tonight! It's been a beautiful week across Montana. Unfortunately, the warm weather has brought muddy water down from the mountains, and all but the tailwater fisheries are high and off-color.

We floated the Madison yesterday from Varney to Eight-Mile. The river is in perfect shape in spite of all the warm weather we've seen. Fishing was consistent with nymphs from ramp to ramp. We stopped at many of the usual spots, and saw a variety of nymphs produce nice fish. Rubberlegs, prince, shop-vac, lightning bug, and the zebra all found a few fish for us.

Highs are predicted to be in the 40's for valley's and colder in the mountains over the next four days. If that really happens, there's a good chance that some of the run-off will seize up, and we might see rivers like the Yellowstone come back into shape. I've heard reports from Livingston of blanket March Brown emergences, but no fish willing to come up through the mud.  With better visibility that should change. Stay Tuned.
